When can I change my Medicare Advantage Plan?

If certain events happen in your life, you can change your Medicare Advantage Plan and Medicare Drug Coverage outside of the Annual Election Period (AEP) that runs from October 15th to December 7th each year. We will discuss the most common SEPs in today’s BLOG.

 

CHANGES IN RESIDENCE:


You moved to a new county or state that in not in your current plan’s service area.

 

What options are available?

Switch to a new Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Drug Plan available in your new service area.


*If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan and you move outside your plan’s service area, you can also choose to return to Original Medicare. If you don’t join a new Medicare Advantage Plan during the time explained below, you’ll be enrolled in Original Medicare when you’re disenrolled from your old Medicare Advantage Plan.

 

What is the enrollment period?

There are 2 options for this SEP and depends on when you notify your current carrier.

 

If you tell your carrier before you move:

Your SEP starts the month before you move and continues 2 full months after you move.


 If you tell you carrier after you move:

Your SEP starts the month you tell the carrier and extends 2 full months after telling the carrier.

 

You moved to a new address in your plan’s service, but you also have new plan options available.

 

What options are available?

Switch to a new Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Drug Plan.

 

What is the enrollment period?

There are 2 options for this SEP and depends on when you notify your current carrier.

 

If you tell your carrier before you move:

Your SEP starts the month before you move and continues 2 full months after you move.

 

If you tell you carrier after you move:

Your SEP starts the month you tell the carrier and extends 2 full months after telling the carrier.

 

You moved back to the U.S. after living outside of the country


What options are available?

Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Drug Plan.

 

What is the enrollment period?

You can enroll 2 full months after the month you are back in the U.S.

 

You live in, or recently moved out of a facility such as a Nursing Home of Rehabilitation Hospital.


What options are available?

Join a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare drug plan.

Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare drug plan.

Drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to Original Medicare.

Drop your Medicare prescription drug coverage.

 

What is the enrollment period?

You can enroll, change or drop coverage as long as you live in the facility and 2 full months after the month you move out.

 

You were in jail or incarcerated and have been released


What options are available?

Enroll in a new Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Drug Plan.


What is the enrollment period?

You can enroll, change or drop coverage as long as you live in the facility and 2 full months after the month you move out.

 

If your Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B are active, you have 2 full months to enroll after your release.

 

If your Medicare Part A and Medicare part B are inactive, you need to sign up for Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B to be eligible for Medicare Advantage.

 

YOU LOSE YOUR CURRENT COVERAGE

 

You are no longer eligible for Medicaid


What options are available?

Join a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare drug plan.

Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare drug plan.

Drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to Original Medicare.

Drop your Medicare prescription drug coverage.

 

What is the enrollment period?

You can change plans 3 full months from either the date you lost coverage or the date you’re no longer eligible whichever is later.

 

YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR OTHER COVERAGE


You are eligible for coverage offered by your employer or union

What options are available?

Disenroll from your Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare drug plan to enroll in the private plan offered by your employer or union.


What is the enrollment period?

When your employer or union has open enrollment.

 

YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID, OR RECEIVE EXTRA HELP FOR MEDICARE PART D COVERAGE

 

What options are available?

Enroll, change or drop Medicare Advantage with drug coverage

Enroll, change or drop Medicare Drug Coverage

 

What is the enrollment period?

You can use this SEP once a quarter for the 1st three quarters of the year. Changes take effect the 1st of month following the enrollment month.

 

  • January to March

  • April to June

  • July to September
