What Is Medicare Extra Help?

If you're having trouble paying for your prescription medications, Medicare Extra Help may be able to reduce your costs.

Also known as the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), Extra Help is a federal program that assists eligible Medicare beneficiaries with the cost of their Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.

Extra Help May Reduce:

  • Monthly Part D premiums

  • Annual deductibles

  • Prescription copays and coinsurance

  • Out-of-pocket prescription drug costs

Who May Qualify?

You may be eligible if you have limited income and resources. Some individuals automatically qualify, including many people who:

  • Receive full Medicaid benefits

  • Participate in a Medicare Savings Program

  • Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

If you don't automatically qualify, you may still be eligible based on your financial situation.

Why It's Worth Checking

Thousands of Medicare beneficiaries qualify for Extra Help but never apply—potentially missing out on significant savings on their prescription medications.
